The Clutter Fairy Weekly #277

Value Versus Values: How We Think About What Our Stuff Is Worth

October 26, 2025/0 Comments/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

Our perceptions of the value of our stuff can cloud our judgment about what really supports the life we want to be living—and what doesn’t. But a focus on our values helps us ground our decluttering decisions in a better understanding of ourselves. In episode #277 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores value-based patterns of thinking that lead to clutter and offers strategies for re-evaluating what we really want.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Values in the Decluttering Process

This week’s assignment is to revisit your decision to keep something that you’ve previously contemplated discarding.

  • Identify an item in your space for which you’ve struggled to make a keep/toss decision—something you’ve considered eliminating but ended up keeping.
  • On the left side of a sheet of paper, jot down one or more reasons that you’ve kept this item up until now.
  • On the right side, answer the following questions about the selected item:

    • What does it mean to you?
    • What is the item’s purpose or function in your home?
    • What do you find uniquely useful about the item? (Is it actually currently useful, or merely potentially useful in the future?)
    • What do you find beautiful about the item? (Do you find it beautiful now, or are you remembering how you once felt about it?)
  • Compare the two lists you’ve written. Are they in alignment or at odds? Reflect on whether you still wish to keep the item or you’re ready to release it.

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.
