The Clutter Fairy Weekly #200

Why We Procrastinate and What We’re Planning to Do About It…Later

February 9, 2024/0 Comments/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

Why do we procrastinate? We’re probably not lazy or lacking in self-control. We know what needs to be done and why it’s important to us. So why do we go out of our way to avoid the inevitable? In episode #200 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores procrastination and avoidance behavior and suggests tips and techniques for breaking an unproductive cycle.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Procrastination Journal

This week’s assignment is to spend some time paying attention to your experiences with procrastination:

  • Keep a “procrastination journal” for one week. For this purpose, you may keep a single sheet of paper close at hand, open an electronic file, or set aside a page within a notebook you already use.
  • Each time you feel the urge to procrastinate this week, jot down a note about what was going on for you. Answer as many of the following questions as you can:
    • What do you feel that you ought to be doing?
    • What do you feel like doing instead?
    • What emotion(s) do you associate right now with the task you’re avoiding?
    • What emotion(s) do you associate right now with the activity that you’re doing instead?
  • Resist the urge to criticize or judge yourself in this exercise. Just observe your reactions and note what’s going on.
  • At the end of a week, review your procrastination journal entries to see what patterns and trends you can identify. Notice whether exercise has had any noticeable effect on your tendency to procrastinate.

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.
