The Clutter Fairy Weekly #168

Life Is a Journey: Prepare and Pack for Smooth Vacation Travel

According to a March report from Forbes, 49 percent of Americans plan to travel more in 2023 than they did last year. Travel is also expected to increase within Europe and the U.K. But if you’re not careful, the hard work that travel entails can cut into the fun. In episode #168 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers tips for planning, packing, and preparing for lower-stress vacation travel.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

This week’s assignment is to make advance preparations for your next trip or a special weekend of dedicated R&R:

  • Refresh your toiletries bag or Dopp kit:
    • Pull all the contents out, then wash or wipe out the bag.
    • Refill travel size bottles with products you like to use. If you’ve been packing full-size bottles, this might be a good time to buy or create travel size containers of your favorites.
    • Check over-the-counter medications and prescriptions for expiration dates. Restock fresh meds and take out anything you can’t identify or no longer take.
  • Stage a packing area: Set up a small table or identify a place where luggage can lay open, waiting for you to pack it. Put your luggage there. Seed the luggage with a few things that you already know you want to take with you, such as gifts for your family or a book you plan to read.
  • If there’s no travel on your horizon, consider treating yourself to a “staycation.” Make a shopping list of special food and drinks, or a list of the restaurants from which you’d like to order food for delivery. Gather games, movies, or books to keep the family entertained. Then pick a weekend to take time off from your usual routines and duties and enjoy a relaxing and fun staycation!

Tittle #169?…Ok StayCation I did! Marinated/BBQ’d Filet Mignon, Blueberry Salad, Garlic Bread, then S’mores’ via a UNO Chocolate bar with melted Marshmallows rolled up inside a Sugar Ice Cream Cone = Num!
All of this after I spent Holiday weekend clearing “outside” yard/re-staging carport, “inside” clearing my expired Meds, food stuffs into recycling bins.
THANK YOU Gayle and Ed and All…for the inspiration to just stay home, be quiet, eat well and be simply prosperous by getting outside in the Sun..!

I just listened to this episode, and it was timely, since I’m leaving on a trip to Portugal and Spain in two days!

I do have a master packing list, washed all the potential clothes for the trip and just refreshed my toiletries kit from three such kits I had made in the past, plus the toiletries list on my master packing list.

I also put together packing cubes for my socks and underwear, and my concert attire.

I need to clear off a space on the spare bed so I can set up my suitcase for the actual packing. I will check the weather for each day and place we will be, select an outfit. put it in a packing cube and pack it.

    Thanks for the timely episode!
