The Clutter Fairy Weekly #305

How to Start Decluttering a Large Space—and Other Small Topics

June 5, 2026/0 Comments/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

A viewer asked, “What’s the best way to declutter large areas like attics and basements?” A vast, cluttered space can shut us down before we even get started, but there are simple strategies you can implement to tame the beast! In episode #305 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, outlines a flexible plan for decluttering a large space and explores other short topics suggested by our audience.

Some content in this episode is based on results of a survey of our audience.

The next selection for The Clutter Fairy Book Club will be New Order: A Decluttering Handbook for Creative Folks (and Everyone Else) by Fay Wolf. Shop for the paperback or ebook at Bookshop.org.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Keeping Pace

This week’s assignment is to examine an area of your life or your home in which accumulation outpaces your ability to declutter.

  • Identify a part of your life—a habit, routine, hobby, pastime, chore, etc.—in which new stuff coming into your home tends to accumulate more quickly than you’re able to eliminate clutter. Examples:
    • Magazines arrive in the mailbox much faster than you can keep up with reading them.
    • You shop for new items for your wardrobe but rarely take the time to free up closet space.
    • You continue to snip and collect recipes even though you’ve only ever tried a handful of them.
    • You buy collectibles at estate sales intending to resell them on Ebay. Inventory is out of control!
  • Reflect on the disparity between your rate of accumulation and the work—or play—that would be required to dispose of the excess stuff in this area of your life. Answer these questions:
    • Are you willing to increase your effort to get ahead of clutter in this aspect of your life?
    • If not, what mindset shift might help you bring the incoming stuff under better control?
    • What changes in your behavior might stem the tide of accumulation?

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.
