The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.
Keeping Pace
This week’s assignment is to examine an area of your life or your home in which accumulation outpaces your ability to declutter.
- Identify a part of your life—a habit, routine, hobby, pastime, chore, etc.—in which new stuff coming into your home tends to accumulate more quickly than you’re able to eliminate clutter. Examples:
- Magazines arrive in the mailbox much faster than you can keep up with reading them.
- You shop for new items for your wardrobe but rarely take the time to free up closet space.
- You continue to snip and collect recipes even though you’ve only ever tried a handful of them.
- You buy collectibles at estate sales intending to resell them on Ebay. Inventory is out of control!
- Reflect on the disparity between your rate of accumulation and the work—or play—that would be required to dispose of the excess stuff in this area of your life. Answer these questions:
- Are you willing to increase your effort to get ahead of clutter in this aspect of your life?
- If not, what mindset shift might help you bring the incoming stuff under better control?
- What changes in your behavior might stem the tide of accumulation?
