The Clutter Fairy Weekly #271

Clutter-friendly Ways to Give, Receive, Downsize, and Regift Gifts

We often endow items we receive as gifts with a special status in our decluttering decision-making. But even gifts become clutter if we don’t love, need, or use them! In episode #271 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores the complex issues of decluttering gifts and offers clutter-conscious approaches to giving, receiving, downsizing, and regifting gifts.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Gracious Regifting

This week’s assignment is to make space for new incoming gifts by eliminating something that no longer serves you, even though it was a gift.

  • Identify an item you received as a gift that you no longer love, need, use, or wish to display.
  • Reflect on possible recipients for the item:
    • Has someone you know expressed a fondness or desire for the item?
    • Can you think of a person or organization who could make good use of the item, such as a women’s shelter?
    • Do you have a resale or charity shop that you like to patronize?
  • Take a moment to express your gratitude to the person who gave you the gift. You may do this directly, if that person is still living, or just voice your thankfulness privately—either out loud or in your own thoughts.
  • Before you send the item on, take a picture as a way to memorialize the gift and the giver.
  • Pass along the item as the final way in which you honor the gift.
