When the World Confounds Expectations, Declutter Your Expectations
A wise woman said, “You need to declutter your expectations of yourself.” This suggestion felt like advice we should share with The Clutter Fairy audience! In episode #309 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores how real-world experiences confound our expectations for decluttering and organizing projects—and how to adjust our thinking for better results.
Some content in this episode is based on results of a survey of our audience.

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.
Update Your Expectations
This week’s assignment is to revisit a project on which you fell short of your expectations.
- Identify a decluttering or organizing project that you left incomplete or never quite got off the ground.
- Think about the plan you made for the project and any expectations you set for yourself.
- Reflect on whether you might adjust your project plan to include more reasonable expectations or more achievable goals:
- Was time a factor in your not completing the project? Increase the time you allocate for the project.
- Was physical energy or stamina a limiting factor? Try breaking the project into smaller pieces.
- Were your goals for the project insufficiently clear and specific? Choose clear, specific endpoints for your revised project.
- Schedule one or more appointments to begin or resume work on your project this week.
