The Clutter Fairy Weekly #57

Stop Juggling and Start Organizing: Setting Project Priorities

February 10, 2021/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Edward F. Gumnick

Containing the day-to-day accumulation of clutter while trying to reduce a backlog can feel like a juggling act. But like juggling, organizing isn’t magic—it’s a skillset you can learn. In episode #57 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, discusses setting priorities, one of the key skills for an aspiring “organizing acrobat.”

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Peel the First Layer of the Onion

For a current organizing project that you’re finding big or overwhelming, choose the first layer of the onion to peel. In other words, identify one subtask or problem to address as your first priority. For example:

  • If the space or pile contains conspicuous trash or recycling, remove that material without stopping to make any decisions about what’s left.
  • If there’s no trash or recycling, make a quick pass just to remove anything that doesn’t belong in the room in which you’re working.
  • If there’s nothing out of place, scan the space for any obvious items that could be removed for donation.
