The Clutter Fairy Weekly #311

Shopping for the Home That Has Everything: Alternatives to Buying

July 24, 2026/0 Comments/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

Do you continue to enjoy shopping even though you’ve reached a place in your life where you need almost nothing? The dopamine rush from acquiring something new can keep us hooked on the hunt even as we labor to manage the stuff we already own. In episode #311 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, explores why many of us struggle to break the retail-therapy habit and suggests alternative outlets to scratch the shopping itch.

Some content in this episode is based on results of a survey of our audience.

The next selection for The Clutter Fairy Book Club will be New Order: A Decluttering Handbook for Creative Folks (and Everyone Else) by Fay Wolf. Shop for the paperback or ebook at Bookshop.org.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Mindfully Choosing Alternatives to Shopping

This week’s assignment is to explore the disparity (if any) between how much you shop and how much you actually need.

  • Reflect on your current needs—not wants, not “wish lists,” but items that you genuinely need right now to manage your home and life.
  • Consider your typical shopping habits. Are you fulfilling most of your real needs as they arise? How much excess stuff are you bringing home in the process?
  • Try one of the suggestions we made in today’s show for managing your shopping urges or finding alternative activities to replace some of your shopping.
  • Spend a few minutes journaling about your experience.

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.
