The Clutter Fairy Weekly #160

Organizing Now for Future Stuff | Decluttering Your Command Center

March 31, 2023/1 Comment/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

Most of us have a “command center”—a favorite spot where we sit to read, watch TV, and manage our busy lives. We’ll discuss the stuff that tends to collect in these hot zones and offer a simple plan for decluttering your command center.

Even the most perfectly organized space can’t be maintained if the inflow of new possessions outpaces our efforts to declutter. We’ll talk about how to organize now for future stuff by designing systems that accommodate both present collections and new acquisitions.

In episode #160 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, discusses these topics and answers questions from our viewers and listeners.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Ready for Action

This week’s assignment is to reset your “command center” with a focus on how you use the space:

  • Park yourself in the spot you identify as your “command center”—the place in your home where you spend the largest portion of your waking hours.
  • Remove anything from the space that clearly doesn’t belong there, such as:
    • Trash or recyclable materials
    • Discarded clothing or shoes
    • Dirty dishes, drink ware, or food containers
    • Anything left on the floor
  • Evaluate what’s left in the space with a focus on the activities you do there. Ask yourself:
    • What activities do you need to do in this space?
    • What activities do you like to do here?
    • What supplies are critically necessary for your activities?
    • What storage do you need for active projects you work on here?
    • What have you been keeping here that might be stored more effectively somewhere else (for example, unread mail for processing, materials for unfinished projects, etc.)?
    • How can you make the command center work better for you?

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.

Best itty bitty step I took was to just clear the junk,,,Wow!
Already such a HUGE improvement that I went into my kitchen and cleared a whole counter…then moved onto my clothing AND wow…all folded, in place…
Blessing is having the chatter out of my brain so I can focus on commanding in my new found center with peace and solid decisions…Thank you ALL!
