The Clutter Fairy Weekly #35

Guiding Principles for Your Philosophy of Decluttering

Decluttering isn’t just a process—it can be a philosophy, a way of life. Our webcast series, “A Decluttering Philosophy: Changing Our Relationship to Stuff,” examines the relationship with stuff from several different angles, including positive and negative emotions, habits and behaviors, ethical and social questions, and practical approaches to change. In episode #35 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, talks about how to identify the guiding principles for your own personal philosophy of decluttering.

Reflection

Components to reflect on as you consider your personal philosophy of decluttering:

  • your values—the things you consider important, which might include:
    • your roles (i.e., your career, your place in a family or in relationships)
    • your goals and priorities (i.e., what you’d like to accomplish)
    • your principles (i.e., your religious, spiritual, or ethical beliefs)
  • your gifts and talents
  • your tastes and preferences

Thought questions

As you reflect, think about your answers to questions like these:

  • What does “a good life” mean to you?
  • What’s the first thing you would like to add to your life right now?
  • What’s the first thing you would stop doing if you could?
  • What makes you feel fulfilled?
  • What do you care about?
  • Why do you care about it?
  • What brings you joy?
  • What brings you satisfaction?
  • What gives you a sense of purpose?
  • What is your definition of comfort?
  • What do you find beautiful?
  • What do you find inspiring?
  • What do you consider a good use of your time?
  • How would you like to make a difference?
