Have you struggled with clutter for years, but keep feeling like you’re right back at square one? Maybe it’s time to take a critical look at the beliefs, assumptions, and routines that aren’t getting the job done. The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.
Be Honest!
This week’s assignment is to take a deeper dive into the reasons behind one of your keep decisions.
- Identify an item that you’ve previously considered getting rid of, but ultimately decided to keep.
- Jot down one or two reasons that you’ve chosen to keep the item.
- Reflect on whether your reasons for keeping the item might be providing cover for one of the issues we discussed in this episode:
- You keep the item out of a sense of nostalgia.
- You keep the item out of a sense of guilt.
- You keep the item out of uncertainty or fear.
- You keep the item for a hypothetical “just in case” situation.
- You keep the item because it cost a lot of money.
- Now consider whether the reasons you noted for keeping the item still hold up to close scrutiny. Do you truly love, want, use, and/or need this item? If not, are you ready to let it go?
