The Clutter Fairy Weekly #75

For What It’s Worth: Assessing Value in the Struggle Against Clutter

We constantly make judgments about worth, assessing and assigning value to our lives and our stuff. But our notions of perceived value can clash with the reality of our physical surroundings. In episode #75 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, examines value-based emotional responses and habits of thought that sabotage our ability to get or stay organized.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

The Unexpected Guest (with apologies to Agatha Christie)

Take a look at your space from a fresh perspective. Wander through your home and try to see it from the viewpoint of a sudden and unexpected visitor—for example: a casual acquaintance, your boss, a new neighbor, your pastor, or a judgmental in-law. Identify an item or room that you would be embarrassed for that outsider to see. There’s no limit to where this exercise might take you!

  • Is there a horizontal surface to which the clutter just naturally gravitates?
  • Are there groceries or shopping bags that have never been unpacked and put away?
  • Has the laundry (dirty or clean) escaped the bounds of the hampers or even spilled beyond the laundry room?
  • If you had five minutes to get ready for the unexpected visitor in question, what’s the single item you’d most like them not to see?
