Clutter Hacks #21: Top Tip for Reducing the Volume of Photographs You Keep

Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers advice for people who need to reduce the huge volume of photographs that they’ve accumulate: Apply a sorting algorithm, a set of rules to make the keep/toss decisions easier on yourself.

For example, start by getting rid of photos that are out of focus, badly lighted, or just plain bad. Consider discarding images that don’t have any people in them (landscapes, buildings, etc.) or at least reducing them to a small sample to remember the vacation destination or favorite spot. Similarly, consider keeping only a representative sample of images to commemorate a party or other special event. Finally, think about discarding any duplicate or triplicate images, or share them with a family member or friend who might not have copies.

    I know you did this segment just for me. I have one thing to add. I love taking photographs. I was the family photographer. I have a lot of photos of other peoples kids. I don’t have kids. While some of the photos are great, I feel I must give them back to the kids, who are adults now, and let them deal with it. <3 And that's what I am doing…<3

    I think that’s an excellent idea. Let them have the volume pf photos, and you keep a few good ones for your own keepsake pile. They can decide what to do with the rest. Hugs dearie.
