The Clutter Fairy Weekly #52

Child’s Play and Adult Joy: Organizing Your Recipes and Cookbooks

Food writer Craig Claiborne called cooking “child’s play and adult joy.” But a kitchen full of recipe clutter can drain all the joy from cooking. In episode #52 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers strategies for filtering and organizing your saved recipes. We also introduce a new “homework assignment” segment—and a contest!

Homework Assignment

In this episode, we introduced a new segment tentatively called the “Homework Assignment.” (We’re looking for a snappy title for this ongoing segment. See Contest below.)

A Place for Everything

Our viewer Kara inspired our first assignment of 2021 with an anecdote she shared in a previous episode. Kara said, “I remember a flight attendant announcing when we were getting on the plane a nice reminder to ‘put your driver’s license back where you will expect to find it the next time you look for it.’ I’ve never forgotten that.”

With that story in mind, think over your daily life and pick an item of which you frequently lose track (e.g., wallet, keys, phone, purse) and assign it a resting place. Then spend the week actively trying to use that new place. See how it goes—or doesn’t go. Can you adjust your habits to put that item in its new assigned place every time it comes home? If you can, this habit will help you start every day more smoothly.

Then come back next week and tell us how it went. If this routine didn’t work, we can suggest alterations that might help. And if you did create a new habit and established a successful new parking place for something, we’ll cheer for you as a group!
