August 2, 2024/0 Comments/in Media appearances, Podcasts, The Clutter Fairy Weekly, YouTube videos /by Todd Mahloch

How do you handle other people’s opinions about your clutter? How do you make environmentally conscious decisions while downsizing? Is there a difference between “just in case” items and clutter? In episode #220 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, answers your questions about unsolicited opinions, green decluttering, and “just in case” stuff and covers other short topics suggested by our viewers and listeners.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Just in Case…of What?

This week’s assignment is to evaluate an item or collection you’ve been keeping “just in case”:

  • Identify something in your home that you’ve been hanging onto “just in case.”
  • Ask yourself the following questions about this item:
    • How long have you been keeping the object?
    • When was the last time you needed this item—or something like it?
    • How difficult or expensive would it be to replace this thing if you discarded it?
    • Could you find a substitute or a way to manage without the item if you discarded it?
    • What would be the worst consequence of not having this thing?
    • How much time, money, or energy goes into storing, maintaining, cleaning, or keeping track of the item?
    • What other opportunities might you be missing out on by keeping this object?
  • Now reflect on whether you still need this “just in case” item or whether you might finally be ready to let it go.

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.
