The Clutter Fairy Weekly #137

A World of Complex Choices: Ethical Considerations About Clutter

We make hundreds of decisions every week about what to buy, what to discard, where to shop, what to keep, what to give away, and who should have what we don’t want or need any more. In episode #137 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, asks ethical, social, and environmental questions that can guide and influence our relationship with stuff.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

The Five Commandments

This week’s assignment is to draft a list of “commandments” that you’d like to follow as you make choices about what to acquire, keep, or let go in your decluttering efforts. (We decided on five as a manageable number to work with, but your list may have as few or as many items on it as you like.)

  • Brainstorm a list of ethical, social, or environmental standards or principles that you’d like to keep in mind as you shop, organize, and declutter your space.
  • Discuss the list with other members of your household who share responsibility for shopping, household management, and other decision-making in your home.
  • Post the list in a prominent place where you can see and refer to it on a regular basis.
  • Set an appointment in a few months to review and revise your list to evaluate how well it’s working to limit your accumulation or to guide your choices about what to keep or set free.
