| Describe a situation in which someone successfully assisted you with a decluttering or organizing project. What factors contributed to the success of the collaboration? | My sister helped me incorporate items from my MIL’s home into my house while I was also downsizing. I was able to box up my wedding dishes and other dish sets to pass onto other people. She was not judgmental and asked good questions. I could make decisions and she helped with unpacking, packing and rearranging storage in my new home. |
| Describe a situation in which you asked for help with decluttering or organizing, but were unsatisfied with the results. What factors contributed to your dissatisfaction? | I had a professional service provider who helped prep a house for a move and helped With unpacking in a new home. I had organized bins with seasonal decor that on unpacking were rearranged in a way that made no sense for me. Checking in before making changes would have been appreciated. I had to reassemble these groupings that had been labeled. |
| Describe a situation in which you successfully assisted someone else with a decluttering or organizing project. What factors contributed to the success of your efforts? | Discussing a friend’s goals for displaying her collection of chicken plates in her kitchen and creating a layout she could rearrange worked. I could hang her collection successfully. |
| Describe a situation in which you offered help with decluttering or organizing, but you didn’t achieve the desired results. What factors contributed to coming up short of success? | I offered a friend help with organizing medical paperwork during a difficult time. I didn’t realize how important this task was for her to do herself. She redirected me to helping in her yard. I’ve learned to ask, “What can I do to help you?” I try to offer one or two organizational options that she could ponder. And take action when she feels ready. |
| Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode. | I prefer to donate or recycle whenever able. One of my difficult items is what to do with old pillows - which cannot be donated. I hate to send them to landfill. We have ones made from so many different types of material, I don’t know where to start! |
| Future topics | I work with my siblings to keep our family history. Our home has also become the repository for the family photos albums (which we have digitized as whole pages and shared using Google drive and a family googlegroup). We inherited heirlooms from my husband’s family - antique furniture, great grandma’s oil paintings and hand painted china (12 dish packs full). Family has taken a few items but we have not been able to let go of these family treasures. I don’t want to burden our children with all these. I am in the process of documenting great grandma’s artist work and hoping there may be future descendants to “share the wealth” with. |
