Survey #256—Full Response from Kathianne

Have you previously experienced a renovation, remodel, or major DIY project in your home?Other
Please elaborate if you wish.

I suppose you could say blowing up my apartment closet (1 of 2 - 4 foot closets) to put in a washer/dryer combo could perhaps be considered a renovation. It necessitated finding homes for all of the contents of the closet plus displaced the bookshelves on one of the side walls. While I appreciate the washer/dryer, I was happy with having some storage for my clothes, books, and associated items.

Did you declutter as part of your preparations for the project? Describe how clutter complicated or adversely affected the project, if that was part of your experience.Since I had almost no advance warning, did not declutter, and moved contents temporarily to a storage space. After removed the items from the storage space, yes, I did declutter and purchased a rolling clothes rack to house the "survivors" in a partitioned part of the living room. Since I had taken the closet doors off the opposite closet (did not fit well due to settling of the building probably due to earthquakes), I had previously decluttered the other part of my wardrobe about a year before.
Are you making plans for a renovation, remodel, or major DIY project in your home?No
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode. Can always use hints about how to handle incoming as well as backlog. Books and papers are the hardest. Clothes are usually easier due to fit/flatter considerations.

Do really like the reminder that what is kept should foster current life, not previous. Think I need to meditate more on what form the future is likely to take and if some of the saved items could easily be replaced (or become obsolete).
Future topics

Just what I mentioned previously - Ideas to manage incoming and ongoing clutter - especially books and papers.
