Name the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that contributes the most stuff to your living space, including raw materials, tools, equipment, other supplies, reference materials, specialized furniture, etc.Home remodeling projects
Reflecting on your answer to the previous question, describe the part of the activity that contributes most to the clutter in your home. Your answer may be based on volume, size, complexity, or any other factor that makes it difficult to store and manage the stuff for your activity. My husband and I do home remodeling projects together on our home. I guess the worst part of the project is when we are finished and have to deal with the extra materials. All the tools have a place to go, but all the extra materials need a home. I recently suggested to my husband that as soon as we are done with the project, extra materials need to be returned (if possible), donated or trashed, not stored. He agreed. We both find it hard to throw perfectly good materials away thinking maybe we might have to do a repair in the years to come on the recently finished project or maybe we could use the materials for another project. We both were raised with a scarcity mindset; our parents were born in the Depression Era.
Reflecting on your answer to the first question, describe how the cluttered state of stuff related to this activity negatively impacts your ability to carry out or enjoy the activity.Recently, I've thought that I don't want to do any more home remodeling projects because I don't want to deal with the extra materials afterwards. By extra materials I mean like a piece of board that we cut and used part of the piece but have a partial piece that COULD be used for somethings else, the five extra tiles that we didn't need for our project, the short length of guttering that was the remains of the larger piece that we did use. Things that aren't good enough to donate but too good to throw in the trash.
About how much time do you spend on the activity in question in an average week? The last remodeling project my husband and I did lasted from Sept 2022-April 2023. We couldn't work on it every day as we had other things we had to take care of. Maybe 25 hours a week?
What is the hobby, craft, art form, or other recreational activity that you think EVERYONE should try?Something small that they can stick in a drawer at the end of the day!
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s).Gayle, how do you keep your beading projects from becoming clutter? What do you do with your projects when you finish them?
