Please select the statement that best describes your future plans with regard to moving:If I don't die in this apartment, eventually I will be in a much smaller place with more assistance.
Describe any thoughts and feelings that the idea of moving invokes for you, or any positive or negative connotations that moving carries. (This might include memories of past moves, plans for future moves, or your experience with someone else’s move that was significant for you.)I moved in December 2021. 4 bedrooms, full basement, one-car garage to 1075 sq ft apartment in a senior living community. This was a planned move, not forced upon me.
After 11 years of decluttering, my stuff finally fit in my house. And then in 3 months, I had to do it all over, only faster. And I was 11 years older.
I got a lot of help from my daughter, my sister and my friends. But I was shaking with exhaustion those last few days.
My advice: tackle those storage areas now. And be realistic about your energy level.
Consider the present condition of your home and its contents, and then answer this question: If you had to move from your home in a short timeframe, what would the greatest challenges be?If I were unable to live independently, I'd have to leave my apartment.
Challenges: all the stuff that defines my life. Photos, papers, some of my books. The "hard" stuff.
If money, logistics, work, citizenship, travel time, etc., were no obstacle, where would your ideal place to live be? (For example: Ed would like to live in a penthouse in the heart of Rome with a place in the Alban Hills where he’d go on the weekend. He can dream, can’t he?)I like where I am but a pied a terre in NYC, Chicago or Paris would be lovely.
Here’s your chance to ask Gayle and Ed any question you’re curious about. It need not be related to this survey’s topic(s). If we think that your question—and our answer—might be useful or instructive to The Clutter Fairy Weekly audience, we’ll share them in an upcoming episode.Steve's question about his mother's overstuffed house affected me. I felt sorry for him--and he's trying to honor his mother's wishes, probably an impossible quest. I don't know how often this kind of situation comes up but it might be worth an episode.
When I was cleaning out my nephew's house, there were shelves and shelves of neatly filed papers--credit card statements, electric bills, old taxes, receipts for household repairs. I did not examine them closely. I did not shred anything belonging to his parents. It all went into the dumpster. The only thing I shredded were the nephew's pay stubs with his SSN on them because he was still living.
