The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.
Practice Prep for Renovation
This week’s assignment is a thought experiment designed to help you recognize some clutter you’ve been avoiding or ignoring and find motivation to address it:
- Identify a room or space in your home that feels stuck, stale, unappealing, or overstuffed.
- Imagine a renovation project to overhaul this area. What changes would you like to make? Jot down a few ideas.
- Visualize the preparations you’d need to make to carry out the renovation you’ve envisioned. Answer these questions:
- What belongings would you have to move or remove to make room for the work to proceed?
- What furniture would you need to clear from the space or replace with better options in the reimagined space?
- Where would you stash the present contents while the work goes on?
- What would you be willing and ready to let go of as you clear the space in preparation?
- If this space were renovated, what items and furniture would you want to put back into the space?
- Reflect on your answers and think about one or two tasks you could carry out this week to improve the present condition of the space.
