Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Practice Wolf’s Rule for Purging

This week’s assignment is to experiment with Fay Wolf’s “Rule for Purging” as stated in this week’s book club selection. In New Order, Wolf writes:

“The Rule for Purging is incredibly simple: If you don’t use and/or love it (and I mean superduperlove it and would fall into a deep depression if it was gone), then you must let go of it and move forward with a less cluttered, more blissful life.”

  • Identify one or more items that you’ve been struggling to make decisions about keeping.
  • For each item you identified, consider Wolf’s rule above. Can you honestly say that you either use the item or “superduperlove” it? If the answer is no, are you now ready to let the item go?
    • If you are, then place the item into trash, recycling, or donations.
    • If you’re still not ready to part with the item, reflect on what’s keeping you holding on. What conditions does the item satisfy for you to keep it in your home?
